A.V. Kuttimallu Amma was born
in Anakkara Vadakkathu family of Ponnani Taluq in malabar in 1905.
She was courageous freedom fighter and a prominent leader of Kerala.
Amma joined the freedom movement at a very young age. Her husband
was former KPCC President and Minister in Madras state, K. Madhava
Menon.

Amma started her public life as a swadeshi and Khadi worker in 1930.
In 1931 she led groups of women in the picking of foreign cloth-shops
in Calicut. Holding her two months old baby in her hand she led
a procession of women during the Civil-Disobedience Movement. She
was arrested and convicted for two years for breaking the ban orders.
When
she was refused to take th baby with her in prison, quoting the
law she argued and succeeded in carrying the child with her. She
was imprisoned for a year. Again, Amma was locked was locked up
in the Presidency jail for women during the Quit India Movement.
In
1944 she became the president of KPCC and took up the task of organising
Congress in Malabar. Amma had also served as member of AICC and
congress working committee. She was elected again as a member of
Madras Legislative Assembly. She was the Director of Mathrubhumi
for sometime.She passed away in 1986. |
