O.V.Vijayan,
born on 2nd July 1931 at Mankara in Palakkad is a novelist, short
story writer, cartoonist and journalist.
His
first career option was as teacher and then he joined in Sanker's
weekly and Patriot as cartoonist. His works reflect the real fire
of modernism. The uniqueness of Vijayan lies in the fact that he
could present the queries of life with philosophical insight.
His
novels are 'Khassakinte Ithihasam', 'Dharmapuranam', 'Gurusagaram',
'Madhuram gayathy', 'Pravachakante Vazhi' and 'Thalamurakal'.
His
short story collections include 'Oru Neenda Yathrayude Ormakkayi',
'Kadaltheerathu', 'Kattu Paranja Katha', 'Ashanthi', 'Balabodhini',
'Kure Kadhabeejangal', 'Pooraprabandhavum Mattu Kathakalum' and
'Vijayante Kathakal'.
Vijayan's other works are 'Ghoshayathrayil Thaniye', 'Oru Sindoorappottinte
Orma', 'Sandehiyude Samvadam', 'Vargasamaram Svathvam' (Political
write-ups), 'Ente Charithranweshana Pareekshakal (satire), 'Ithihasangalude
Ithihasam', 'Kurippukal' (extracts from essays and cartoons), 'Haindavanum
Atihaindavaum' and 'Ithiri Nerampokku Ithiri Darshanam' (cartoon).
Vijayan himself has translated some of his works to English of which
'Saga of Dharamapuri' (Dharmapuranam), 'Legends of Khasak' (Khasakkinte
Ithihasam) and 'Infinity of Grace' (Gurusagaram) are notable. 'After
the hanging and other stories' and 'O.V. Vijayan: Selected Fiction'

bagged the Kendra Sahithya Academy award, Kerala Sahithya Academy
