Adoptions are done in India inaccordance with "Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act - 1956" and "Guardians and Wards Act-1890". For Adoption in Hindu community, "Adoption Deed" has to be done in Registrar's Office after a written order is obtained from District Court. This deed provides the adopted child a legal right in the family.

Adoption agencies are interested in bringing families together, it will be gratifying to know that the child is enjoying the stay with the adopted parents and hence parents are requested to send a followup report periodically, say every 3 months to the agency. Such report will enable the agency to evaluate the correctness or otherwise of handing over the child to the parents.
